ssorchard  > Miscellaneous > Carlsbad Marathon 2008
Jesse ran his first road race today. Instead of my method, which would be to start with a 5k, then do a 10k, and then a half marathon etc., he went all out and started with a marathon. [For the record, I have done 5 km and 10 km races... would like to get up to a half marathon some day.] The race was in Carlsbad, and I went up there with him to do the driving and to cheer him on. I'll give away the ending--he finished in about 4 h 45 minutes, and even increased his pace after the 22 mile split and picked up extra speed heading towards the finish line. He didn't walk any of it. Awesome! He did say at the end that he wouldn't have been able to run even one more mile. Note for all photos: the all-white bibs are for half marathon runners, the light blue-gray bibs are the 7:30 am start marathon runners, the green bibs are for the 6:30 am start marathoners, and the orange bibs are for the 5:30 am marathoners.

ssorchard > The portable toilet area at ~7 am, about half an hour before the main start. Jesse started early, at 6:30 am, to give himself an extra hour on the course. It was dark when he started, so I don't have any photos from his start. All half marathon runners (~8000 people), and all the competitive marathon runners started at 7:30 am. It was chilly at the start! Carlsbad Marathon 2008
ssorchard > The start and finish of the races was in a mall parking lot. Here's the beginning of sunrise. Carlsbad Marathon 2008
ssorchard > The guys with the yellow flags are pacers... to help runners keep on track for their desired run time. Jesse followed the 5-hour pacer until about the 10 mile mark, then pulled ahead of them. Carlsbad Marathon 2008
ssorchard > The vehicles that cleared the way for the top runners prepare for the start. Slower runners could start at 5:30 am or 6:30 am, so there were a lot of people for the faster runners to pass, and I saw a couple of instances around a refreshment station where they had a hard time getting around the slower runners. ssorchard > I hadn't set my camera properly, so these are a little blurry at first. The elite runners (mostly for the half marathon) warmed up by sprinting up and down the road. I was impressed. Carlsbad Marathon 2008
ssorchard > Although much of it is blurry, I think this shot (accidently) turned out nicely. Carlsbad Marathon 2008. Update: Jane, #59, came in 2nd in the half marathon, behind the woman who is dressed the same and is barely visible on the right of this photo.
ssorchard > I was particularly interested in the female runners. It seems to me that they overcome more to get where they are. But I'm open to other opinions on that. Carlsbad Marathon 2008
