ssorchard  > Miscellaneous > Carlsbad Marathon 2008
Jesse ran his first road race today. Instead of my method, which would be to start with a 5k, then do a 10k, and then a half marathon etc., he went all out and started with a marathon. [For the record, I have done 5 km and 10 km races... would like to get up to a half marathon some day.] The race was in Carlsbad, and I went up there with him to do the driving and to cheer him on. I'll give away the ending--he finished in about 4 h 45 minutes, and even increased his pace after the 22 mile split and picked up extra speed heading towards the finish line. He didn't walk any of it. Awesome! He did say at the end that he wouldn't have been able to run even one more mile. Note for all photos: the all-white bibs are for half marathon runners, the light blue-gray bibs are the 7:30 am start marathon runners, the green bibs are for the 6:30 am start marathoners, and the orange bibs are for the 5:30 am marathoners.

ssorchard > Half marathoner runners and walkers near the back of the starting pack. Carlsbad Marathon 2008
ssorchard > I'm really glad the couple in the center decided to attempt the half marathon, but I have to say that they don't look like your typical runners! Carlsbad Marathon 2008
ssorchard > As I was walking back to the parking lot from the start line, I saw many casual people heading towards the start. Some were even choosing to go use the portable toilets before heading there. This is many minutes after the official start. Carlsbad Marathon 2008
ssorchard > I went to mile 13 to try to see Jesse. SInce it was an out-and-back stretch, it was a good place to see people a couple of times (it was also mile 14.5 or so). While I was there, I got to see the front runners of the 7:30 am start marathon. The two guys in the background are the first two men. They're about to pass a 6:30 am start runner, who seemed surprised I was taking his photo :-) Carlsbad Marathon 2008
ssorchard > This guy is the then-4th place runner at mile 13. Carlsbad Marathon 2008. Update: this guy came in 2nd.
ssorchard > The two front runners coming back. When they passed Jesse (soon before this point), Jesse saw that the guy in the front here was waving to the cheering crowd, while the guy in second was very stoic. Carlsbad Marathon 2008
ssorchard > Third place runner at mile ~14.5. Carlsbad Marathon 2008. Update: this guy came in 3rd. I think he runs for Mexico.
ssorchard > Another top runner. I'd noticed him at the start line... he looked pretty tough! Carlsbad Marathon 2008. Update: this guy came in 5th.
ssorchard > Another top runner. Carlsbad Marathon 2008. Update: this guy came in 12th and is 53!
